Disney's Hollywood Studios

Disney's Hollywood Studios trivia

  • The distinct Mickey Mouse-eared water tower, known as the Earfel Tower, is not designed to hold water.
  • The right ear of the Mickey Mouse statue atop the Crossroads of the World tower is made of copper to function as a lightning rod.
  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is exactly 199 feet tall. If it were 200 feet, FAA regulations would require a navigational light on the summit, which would detract from the ride's 1930s theme.
  • Catastrophe Canyon (featured on the Backlot Tour)'s high-pressure water cannons are strong enough to shoot a basketball over the Empire State Building.
  • The 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club which starred JC Chasez, Keri Russell, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera, among others, was filmed here.
  • The first movie filmed here was Splash, Too, the 1988 direct-to-TV sequel to 1984's Splash, the first movie released under Disney's then-new Touchstone Films label. The sequel was not well-received by fans of the original film, and starred none of the original cast (with the exception of Dody Goodman, who reprised her role as Mrs. Stimler).

Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney-MGM Studios) opened in May 1989 and joined Magic Kingdom and EPCOT as the third theme park of Walt Disney World. The park is themed around 20th-century movies and television, and features a variety of live shows and attractions based on some of the most iconic films from that era. Among the attractions are a few exceptional thrill rides, most notably The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (a 13-story-high vertical drop) and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (a horizontal launch, 0-60 in 2.8 seconds). The latest addition to the park is an interactive live stage show, based on the hit TV show American Idol.
